Last Friday, Myanmar and Thailand were hit by a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake, that has claimed over 2,000 lives and left thousands of families in need of urgent assistance. The earthquake and aftershocks caused widespread destruction of houses and facilities, and severely damaged critical infrastructure, including bridges and roads. There are ongoing concerns that the death toll may continue to rise.
In the midst of this tragedy, we are profoundly relieved that the Good Shepherd sisters and our local partners in mission from Myanmar and Thailand are safe. However, many families we serve have been deeply affected by the disaster and are now facing displacement, disruption of essential services, and growing uncertainty.
On the ground, our sisters and partners continue to closely monitor the situation, assessing and preparing to respond to the most urgent needs of local communities, particularly in Mandalay, one of the most affected areas in Myanmar. GSIF remains committed to supporting their efforts and ensuring an effective and timely response to this emergency.
Our hearts are with all the people of Myanmar and Thailand during these challenging times. We will continue to stay in close contact with sisters and partners and provide updates as the situation develops.
In this time of crisis, your support is more important than ever, and it is needed now.
