Good Shepherd Sisters in India
Five Good Shepherd sisters set foot in India on 14 Aug 1854 to open a new horizon of Good Shepherd Mission. In India established their mission through education, health and homes for the disadvantaged children & young girls. Later expanded the mission to the rural areas to promote the rights and development of tribal and dalit communities. In order to be more effective in their ministries the Indian Province was bifurcated in November 2013 into two new provinces namely; South West India and Central East India/Nepal.

COUNTRY BACKGROUND / OVERVIEW
India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world with a kaleidoscopic variety and rich cultural heritage. It has achieved all-round socio-economic progress since its Independence. India has become self-sufficient in agricultural production and is now one of the top industrialised countries in the world. It covers an area of 32,87,263 sq. km (1,269,346 sq mi), extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. India is the 7th largest country in the world. India is known for its cultural and linguistic diversity; there are as many as 22 languages recognised by the constitution of India and there are hundreds of dialects which people speak in their regions. India has significant number of tribal population (104 millions as per 2011 senses). They are living in the peripheries of the main villages. Agriculture is the main source of living and more than 58% of the population depend on agriculture as their main and only source of livelihood.

50% of the women keep silent and go through the violence as part of their life.
