Good Shepherd Sisters in India
Five Good Shepherd sisters set foot in India on 14 Aug 1854 to open a new horizon of Good Shepherd Mission. In India established their mission through education, health and homes for the disadvantaged children & young girls. Later expanded the mission to the rural areas to promote the rights and development of tribal and dalit communities. In order to be more effective in their ministries the Indian Province was bifurcated in November 2013 into two new provinces namely; South West India and Central East India/Nepal.
Programmes
- Holistic development of children through formal and non-formal education
- Care Protection and rehabilitation of children at risk.
- Education, nutrition, health and family welfare of poor rural and slum children
- Skill training for young girls and women
- Empowerment of women/migrants through co-operatives.
- Relief and rehabilitation of disasters affected
- Responding to human rights, gender based and domestic violence.

Key projects / Activities
- Economic Justice: Empowering women economically to reduce discrimination, improve their income and increase their self esteem.
- Human Rights: protection of rights, improved school education, protection of children.
- Shelter Home-Virar: Education for disadvantaged children, protection from Human trafficking, Protection of rights of children.
- Karunalayam Shelter Home (Completed in April 2020)

COUNTRY BACKGROUND / OVERVIEW
India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world with a kaleidoscopic variety and rich cultural heritage. It has achieved all-round socio-economic progress since its Independence. India has become self-sufficient in agricultural production and is now one of the top industrialised countries in the world. It covers an area of 32,87,263 sq. km (1,269,346 sq mi), extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. India is the 7th largest country in the world. India is known for its cultural and linguistic diversity; there are as many as 22 languages recognised by the constitution of India and there are hundreds of dialects which people speak in their regions. India has significant number of tribal population (104 millions as per 2011 senses). They are living in the peripheries of the main villages. Agriculture is the main source of living and more than 58% of the population depend on agriculture as their main and only source of livelihood.
